About Tom

Tom Gilbert joined the Tulsa World in May of 1988 after two internships; he became the chief photographer in 1998 and started a beer blog called “What the Ale” in 2013. He is a University of Central Oklahoma graduate with a degree in photographic arts. He graduated from Broken Arrow High School in 1984 and completed Tulsa’s Vo-Tech’s two-year photography program. He’s lived in Saudi Arabia and traveled in various countries in the Middle East and Europe. He is married to Karen Gilbert who was a Tulsa City Councilor and is now the executive director of the Citizens Crime Commission. They have three grown children Marshall, Peyton and Karsten. His work has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Sports Illustrated and in numerous books. He is also the house photographer at concert venues in the Tulsa area. He likes to homebrew and run in his spare time.
