July 2015 Meeting – A Day in the Life at the NYTimes

July 23, 2015
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Tulsa Historical Society
2445 S. Peoria Ave.
Tulsa, OK 74114

Guest speaker Mindy Matthews talks about changes in the print industry, changes in journalism and editorial practices since the Charlie Hebdo incident and terrorist attacks on bloggers.
Matthews has worked at the New York Times for 20 years, editing sports, science and, for the last 15 years, foreign and national news.
A native of Kansas City, Mindy Matthews made her first visit to the Tulsa area in 1973, to visit a neighborhood friend who had moved away to Sand Springs. Mindy found out later that the person she knew only as her friend Jody's dad was Nelson Rogers, of the Tulsa chicken-fried steak dynasty, Nelson’s Buffeteria.
Mindy studied American history and English at the University of Missouri, then stayed to get a master's in journalism when she realized that a history degree wasn't particularly marketable in a job search. After graduating, she became an editor at papers in suburban New York, Kansas City, Minneapolis and Seattle before joining the New York Times.
Mindy and her husband and their two dogs live in New Jersey, and she relishes not having to drive to work and the hour of reading time the train ride allows. Despite more than 20 years in the New York City area, she's never come close to becoming a fan of any New York sports teams and remains loyal to her beloved hometown Kansas City Royals. She is thrilled to be back in a part of the country she always tells her East Coast colleagues is truly "the real world."
